Problem Solver: your baby at 10.5 to 11 months
Objects stop being things to mouth and start being things to use.
Between 10.5 and 11 months, many babies begin using objects the way they are meant to be used, holding a cup to their mouth or a brush to their hair. Two naps and 12 to 16 hours of total sleep remain typical, and three meals a day plus snacks is the usual feeding pattern.
The shift in this phase is from exploring to intending. A baby who used to bang everything now bangs some things and stacks others, puts blocks in a cup, hunts for a toy hidden under a blanket, and repeats whatever got a reaction the first time. Frustration often rises at the same time, because intentions are now bigger than hands can deliver.

What may be happening
Body
- Cruising becomes confident and faster, and many babies begin letting go of the furniture for a second or two.
- Squatting to pick something up and standing again without holding on shows real balance progress.
- The pincer grasp is usually reliable now, which allows small pieces of food, buttons and zips to be handled.
- Both hands may work together on one task, such as holding a container with one hand while posting something in with the other.
Brain
- Objects are used for their purpose, so a cup goes to the mouth and a phone goes to the ear.
- Putting things into a container and tipping them out again is a favorite, and it is genuine problem solving.
- Many babies now look for a toy hidden under a cloth while they watch, rather than treating it as gone.
- Simple one step requests may be followed, especially when paired with a gesture.
Connection
- Games with a shape, like pat-a-cake or rolling a ball back and forth, become properly interactive.
- Many babies watch your face after doing something, checking how you react before deciding what to do next.
- Frustration and early tantrums are common, since wanting outpaces being able.
- Strong preferences appear, for particular people, particular toys and particular routines.
Sleep at 10.5 to 11 months
Two naps and a total of 12 to 16 hours in 24 hours is still the usual picture. Wake windows commonly sit around three to four hours, with the longest before bed. Around now, some babies start refusing the morning nap or taking a very short one, which often looks like readiness for a single nap. In most cases it is temporary, since the genuine move to one nap usually happens between 13 and 18 months.
| Sleep | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Total sleep in 24 hours | 12 to 16 hours |
| Night sleep | A stretch of 9 to 12 hours |
| Naps per day | 2 |
| Nap length | 30 minutes to 2 hours |
| Wake windows | About 3 to 4 hours |
| One nap transition | Most commonly between 13 and 18 months |
Feeding
Three meals plus one or two snacks, alongside breast milk or formula, is the usual pattern for 10 to 12 month olds. The AAP suggests roughly 750 to 900 calories a day at this stage, with about half still coming from milk. Many babies want to hold the spoon themselves, which is messy and useful. Self feeding with hands remains the main route into a meal for most babies this age.
- Throwing food from the high chair is developmentally normal at this age and usually signals the end of a meal rather than dislike of the food.
- The NHS describes about three milk feeds and around 400 ml of formula a day for 10 to 12 month olds, which is less than in earlier months.
- Offering the same foods the family eats, adapted for salt, sugar and texture, is generally preferred to a separate baby menu.
- Choking risks still apply. Whole grapes, nuts, popcorn and hard raw vegetables are best avoided, or cut and cooked to be safe.
