Almost There: your baby at 11 to 12 months
The last weeks before one, when everything feels about to happen.
Between 11 and 12 months, many babies stand alone briefly and take their first steps around their first birthday, though anywhere from nine to fifteen months is common. Sleep still totals 12 to 16 hours in 24 hours across two naps, and one or two words plus mama or dada is typical.
This last stretch of the first year often feels like waiting. Some babies walk before the birthday, many walk after it, and a few are still cruising happily at fourteen months. None of that predicts anything about later coordination. What is quietly happening underneath is a large jump in understanding, so your baby probably follows far more of what you say than they can say back.

What may be happening
Body
- Many babies pull to stand easily, cruise quickly and can stand alone for a few seconds without holding on.
- First steps often arrive around the first birthday, and walking anywhere between about nine and fifteen months is common.
- The pincer grasp is usually well established, so small pieces of food and small objects are handled precisely.
- Many babies can drink from a cup with help and may push an arm into a sleeve when being dressed.
Brain
- One to three words plus mama or dada is typical by the first birthday, and having none yet is also within range.
- Understanding is well ahead of speech, so simple requests and familiar words are often followed.
- Objects are used correctly, things are put into containers on purpose, and hidden toys are searched for.
- Pointing becomes a real conversation, used to ask for things and to show you something.
Connection
- Attachment is at its strongest, and separation anxiety often continues through this period.
- Many babies are shy or wary with strangers and take longer to warm up than they used to.
- Favorite toys and comfort objects matter, and losing one can genuinely upset a baby this age.
- Games with turns, like handing something over and getting it back, are now understood and enjoyed.
Sleep at 11 to 12 months
Two naps is still typical at twelve months, and the total usually stays in the 12 to 16 hour range. Wake windows commonly sit around three to four hours. Many families expect a switch to one nap at the first birthday, but most babies are not ready until somewhere between 13 and 18 months. New walking skills can disturb sleep for a few weeks, since babies often practice standing and stepping in the crib before settling.
| Sleep | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Total sleep in 24 hours | 12 to 16 hours |
| Night sleep | A stretch of 9 to 12 hours |
| Naps per day | 2, morning and early afternoon |
| Nap length | 30 minutes to 2 hours |
| Wake windows | About 3 to 4 hours |
| One nap transition | Most often between 13 and 18 months |
Feeding
Three meals a day plus one or two snacks, with breast milk or formula alongside, remains the pattern until the first birthday. From twelve months, whole cow's milk can become the main drink for babies who are weaned, and honey becomes safe. The AAP puts daily needs at roughly 750 to 900 calories for 8 to 12 month olds. Many babies also begin moving from bottles to cups around now.
- Whole cow's milk is generally recommended from 12 months rather than before, since it lacks nutrients babies need in the first year.
- Honey can be introduced after the first birthday. Before then it carries a risk of infant botulism.
- Breastfeeding can continue well beyond a year. The AAP supports continuing for two years or longer if it suits you both.
- Appetite often drops in the second year as growth slows, so a smaller eater at thirteen months is usually not a problem.
