Little Cruiser: your baby at 9.5 to 10.5 months
Furniture becomes a handrail, and the world gets taller.
Between 9.5 and 10.5 months, many babies pull up to stand and cruise sideways along furniture, holding on the whole way. Sleep usually totals 12 to 16 hours in 24 hours across two naps. Separation anxiety commonly peaks somewhere between 10 and 18 months, so clinginess often intensifies now.
Cruising is balance practice more than walking practice. Your baby is learning how much weight a leg can take, how far a hand can reach, and what happens when the sofa runs out. Most babies cruise for weeks or months before letting go. This is also the point at which floor level childproofing needs to be redone at standing height.

What may be happening
Body
- Pulling to stand becomes routine, and many babies begin cruising sideways along sofas, low tables and crib rails.
- Lowering back down to sitting is often learned after standing, and controlled squatting usually follows.
- The pincer grasp becomes more precise, so very small objects are now within reach and within choking range.
- Crawling, for babies who crawl, becomes fast and purposeful, including crawling toward you specifically.
Brain
- Many babies now understand a handful of everyday words and routine phrases well before they can say them.
- Dropping food from the high chair repeatedly is an experiment in gravity and in your reaction, not defiance.
- Putting objects into a container and taking them out again becomes absorbing, and it is real spatial learning.
- Imitation sharpens, so gestures like waving, clapping and holding a phone to an ear may be copied.
Connection
- Separation anxiety often reaches its most intense point somewhere between 10 and 18 months.
- Many babies check your face before deciding whether something new is safe, which is called social referencing.
- A specific blanket or soft toy may become important, and that attachment can help with separations.
- Familiar people are strongly preferred, and warming up to visitors may take much longer than it used to.
Sleep at 9.5 to 10.5 months
Two naps is the standard pattern at this age, with total sleep usually falling between 12 and 16 hours in 24 hours. Wake windows tend to stretch to around three to four hours, and the longest gap is usually before bedtime. Separation anxiety often shows up at bedtime and in the small hours, and pulling to stand in the crib can turn a brief stir into a full waking. Lower the mattress once standing starts.
| Sleep | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Total sleep in 24 hours | 12 to 16 hours |
| Night sleep | A stretch of 9 to 12 hours |
| Naps per day | 2, usually morning and early afternoon |
| Nap length | 30 minutes to 2 hours |
| Wake windows | About 3 to 3.75 hours |
| One nap transition | Usually later, most often between 13 and 18 months |
Feeding
Three meals a day plus one or two snacks is typical now, with breast milk or formula continuing alongside. NHS guidance describes about three milk feeds and around 400 ml of formula a day for 10 to 12 month olds, while AAP guidance sits nearer 24 ounces, roughly 720 ml. Textures usually move on from purees toward soft lumps and finger foods your baby can manage independently.
- Milk amounts differ between UK and US guidance, so ranges are wide. Growth and your doctor's view matter more than hitting a specific number.
- An open cup or a free flow cup without a valve is usually recommended for water at meals, with bottles gradually reducing.
- Cow's milk is not recommended as a main drink before 12 months, though small amounts in cooking are generally considered fine.
- Honey is avoided completely before the first birthday because of the risk of infant botulism.

When to check in with your doctor
Willo is a parenting companion, not a medical app. If something feels off, ask.
- Your baby does not bear weight on their legs when held in a standing position.
- Your baby does not babble, does not respond to their name, or does not look for an object hidden while they watch.
- Your baby drags one side of the body when moving, or consistently uses one hand and ignores the other.
- Your baby has lost a skill they had before. Call your doctor rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.
