Little Helper: your toddler at 25 to 27 months
The urge to help is real, and it arrives long before the skill does.
Between 25 and 27 months, many toddlers genuinely want to help. Sweeping, wiping and carrying alongside you is how belonging gets practiced. Most are combining words into short phrases, sleeping 11 to 14 hours in 24 hours with one nap, and starting to show signs of toilet readiness, though the average age training begins is 2 to 3 years.
Helping at this age is slower than doing it yourself, and that is the point. Copying real work is how toddlers learn sequences, tools and their own place in the household. It is also where the first real cooperation appears, alongside the first real refusals. The same toddler who insists on carrying the bowl may refuse to share a single toy ten minutes later.

What may be happening
Body
- Carrying, pouring and wiping are all easier now that balance and grip have improved.
- Many toddlers can walk up and down stairs alone, often with two feet on each step.
- Undressing is usually mastered before dressing, and many can manage large buttons and loose clothes with help.
- Many toddlers now stay dry for two hours at a stretch, one of the physical signs of toilet readiness.
Brain
- Copying real work becomes purposeful, and many toddlers repeat the same job until the sequence sticks.
- Two-step instructions are often understood, such as get your shoes and bring them here.
- Pretend play borrows directly from your day, feeding dolls, answering phones and cooking dinner.
- Many toddlers begin to grasp before and after, so what comes next in the routine starts to make sense.
Connection
- Helping is often the first real cooperation, and noticing the effort tends to keep it going.
- Sharing stays hard because owning something is still a new idea, and mine is doing a lot of work.
- Many toddlers show early empathy, offering comfort or a toy when someone is upset.
- Separations may still be difficult, and often become easier around the third birthday.
Sleep at 25 to 27 months
Most toddlers this age sleep 11 to 14 hours in 24 hours, usually 10 to 12 hours at night plus one nap of about one to three hours. Nap resistance is common without the nap actually being finished, and a quiet rest period often keeps the afternoon workable. Wanting to help with the bedtime routine, carrying pajamas or choosing the book, tends to reduce the stalling that follows.
| Sleep | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Total sleep in 24 hours | 11 to 14 hours |
| Night sleep | usually 10 to 12 hours |
| Naps per day | one, usually early afternoon |
| Nap length | about 1 to 3 hours |
| Awake between sleeps | around 5 to 6 hours |
| Bedtime routine | same short sequence each night works better than a longer one |
Eating and mealtimes
Mealtimes go better when your toddler has a job. Carrying their own plate, pouring from a small jug or tearing lettuce gives some control back, which is often what the resistance is really about. Three meals with one or two snacks at roughly set times suits most. Milk is around 16 to 24 ounces a day of low-fat or nonfat after two, and any juice is best kept to about 4 ounces.
- Serving small portions and letting your toddler ask for more usually works better than a full plate.
- Picky eating commonly appears between two and six, and often comes and goes rather than settling permanently.
- New foods may need many calm offers before they are accepted, and pressure tends to slow that down.
- Whole grapes, nuts, popcorn, raw hard vegetables and uncut hot dogs remain choking risks at this age.

When to check in with your doctor
Willo is a parenting companion, not a medical app. If something feels off, ask.
- Speak to your pediatrician or health visitor if your toddler has fewer than around fifty words, is not putting two words together, or has lost words or skills.
- Ask for advice about painful, hard or withheld poop, wetting after a period of being reliably dry, or pain when peeing.
- Mention it if your toddler does not respond to their name, avoids eye contact, or shows no interest in pretend play or in other people.
- Contact a doctor about weight loss, refusing all fluids, or extreme distress that does not settle at all with comfort.
