Willo phase 10: The Explorer
Phase 10 of 35 · 6.5–7.5 months

The Explorer: your baby at 6.5 to 7.5 months

Sitting steady, hands busy, and a growing sense that things still exist once they vanish.

Between 6.5 and 7.5 months, many babies sit steadily, pass toys hand to hand and babble with real consonants. Sleep often totals 12 to 16 hours across 2 to 3 naps. Solids typically build towards 2 to 3 small meals a day, with milk still the main source of nutrition.

Once sitting is stable, exploring gets serious. Toys are passed between hands, banged together, turned over and dropped to see what happens. Babble picks up hard consonants, so sounds like bababa and dadada arrive, usually without meaning attached yet. Many babies also begin to notice who is a stranger, which can make outings feel different almost overnight.

What may be happening

Body

  • Most babies sit without support now, and many can stay upright with both hands free for play.
  • Objects transfer from hand to hand, and get turned, twisted and banged together on purpose.
  • Food is picked up with a whole hand raking motion, and the thumb and finger pincer grip usually arrives nearer 9 months.
  • Some babies begin rocking on hands and knees, pushing backwards or army crawling, although crawling has a very wide range and some babies never do it.

Brain

  • Object permanence keeps developing, and many babies start looking towards where a dropped toy went instead of losing interest in it.
  • Babble gains true consonants, with repeated syllables like bababa and dadada, which are practice rather than words.
  • Many babies turn when their name is called, although a consistent response usually settles closer to 9 months.
  • Repetition is the method: the same drop, the same bang and the same sound, tested until the result becomes predictable.

Connection

  • Wariness of strangers often begins in this window, and it is a sign your baby can now tell familiar from unfamiliar.
  • Peekaboo becomes genuinely funny, because your baby is starting to expect you to come back.
  • Arms may go up to be picked up, an early piece of deliberate communication that arrives well before words.
  • Many babies watch faces closely during meals and copy expressions, chewing motions and sounds.

Sleep at 6.5 to 7.5 months

Sleep usually totals 12 to 16 hours a day, with 9 to 12 hours of it at night and brief wakings that many babies resettle from alone. Most take 2 to 3 naps, and many drop to two somewhere in this window. Nemours notes most babies this age no longer need a middle of the night feed, although wanting one is different from needing one, and new motor skills often unsettle nights for a week or two.

Feeding

Solids usually move from a taste to a routine in this month, building towards 2 to 3 small meals a day alongside breast milk or formula. Textures can get thicker and lumpier, and soft finger foods let babies practise self feeding. Milk still supplies most nutrition, with formula fed babies often taking 6 to 8 ounces (180 to 240 ml) about 4 to 5 times a day.

Questions parents ask

How many naps should a 7 month old take?
Most 7 month olds take 2 to 3 naps a day, and many move to two somewhere between 6 and 9 months. Daytime sleep usually adds up to around 2 to 3.5 hours inside a 12 to 16 hour total. If the third nap has become short and hard to get, that is often the sign it is on its way out.
When do babies start crawling?
There is no single answer, and crawling is one of the most variable milestones. Many babies begin rocking on hands and knees between 6 and 9 months, then move in some direction, often backwards first. Some army crawl, some scoot on their bottom and some go straight from sitting to pulling up. What matters is that mobility is developing somehow.
Why is my baby suddenly scared of people they know?
Stranger wariness usually appears in the second half of the first year and is a developmental step rather than a setback. Your baby can now tell familiar faces from unfamiliar ones and prefers yours. Letting new people approach slowly, from your lap, tends to work better than a fast handover. Separation anxiety often follows and peaks between 10 and 18 months.
How much solid food should a 7 month old have?
Most babies are working towards 2 to 3 small meals a day at this age, and portions are still small. Breast milk or formula stays the main source of nutrition until around 12 months, so solids are added around feeds. Following your baby's cues helps: turning away, closing the mouth or pushing the spoon back usually means they are finished.
Should my 7 month old sleep through the night?
Some do and many do not. By 6 to 7 months most babies are capable of a long night stretch, often 9 hours or more with brief wakings, and Nemours notes most no longer need a night feed. Plenty still wake, especially while teething or learning to sit and crawl. Persistent, distressed waking is worth raising with your doctor.

Should I worry if my 7 month old cannot sit up unsupported?
Not usually. Steady unsupported sitting commonly arrives between 6 and 8 months, and some babies take until closer to 9 months, especially if they were born early. Look for a baby who can sit propped on their hands, push up in tummy time and hold their head steadily. No sitting with support at all by 9 months is worth raising.
Why does my baby drop everything off the high chair?
Dropping is an experiment rather than defiance. Around this age babies are testing cause and effect and starting to grasp that objects still exist once they leave sight, so a spoon that falls and gets returned is a reliable and fascinating result. It usually eases over the following months. A mat under the chair saves a good deal of cleaning.
When can my baby start finger foods?
Many babies are ready for soft finger foods from around 6 to 8 months, once they can sit steadily and bring things to the mouth. Suitable options are soft enough to squash between finger and thumb, cut into strips a baby can hold. Whole nuts, whole grapes, popcorn and raw hard fruit or vegetables are choking risks and should be avoided.
Does it count if my 7 month old says mama without meaning it?
Repeated syllables like mamama and bababa usually appear between 6 and 9 months and are sound practice rather than words at first. Meaning tends to attach a few months later, often nearer 12 months. It is still a real milestone. If a baby is not babbling or copying any sounds by 7 months, hearing is worth checking.
Why does my baby wake at the same time every night?
Predictable waking often lines up with the end of a sleep cycle, and the body clock reinforces a habit quickly once it forms. Hunger, a wet diaper, temperature, noise or teething may have started it. Many families find it fades once the cue behind it changes. Waking with distress, pain or fever should be discussed with your doctor.
Is it time to drop the third nap at 7 months?
Possibly, and the move from three naps to two commonly happens between 6 and 9 months. Signs may include a third nap that becomes short and hard to get, bedtime pushing later, or early morning waking. Total sleep usually stays between 12 and 16 hours across the day. Transitions often take a few weeks and are rarely tidy.
How much milk should a 7 month old have alongside solids?
Breast milk or formula is still the main source of nutrition at 7 months. Formula fed babies commonly take about 6 to 8 ounces (180 to 240 ml) roughly four to five times a day, staying under around 32 ounces (960 ml) in 24 hours. Breastfed babies usually continue to feed on demand, with solids added around feeds.
Can my 7 month old have eggs, dairy and fish?
Yes, in age appropriate forms. The AAP notes there is no evidence that delaying eggs, dairy, soy, peanut products or fish beyond 4 to 6 months prevents allergy, and keeping allergens in the diet regularly once introduced is generally advised. Cow's milk as a main drink still waits until 12 months, although dairy within food is fine earlier.
Why does my baby bang their head or rock on all fours?
Rhythmic rocking and gentle head banging are common in the second half of the first year and are usually self soothing or motor practice before crawling. Most babies grow out of it. Worth discussing with a doctor is head banging that causes injury, happens alongside developmental delay, or comes with a loss of skills already gained.
Is it normal for my 7 month old to hate the car seat now?
It is common. Babies who can sit and move often object to being strapped down, and stranger wariness and separation feelings can make being out of sight in a rear facing seat harder. Comfort items, a sunshade and shorter journeys may help. The seat is not negotiable, so distraction usually works better than loosening the straps.
Why does my baby scream at the top of their voice for fun?
Loud shrieking around this age is usually sound play. Your baby is testing volume and pitch and noticing that a big noise reliably gets a response. It is a normal part of language development rather than distress or bad behaviour. Reacting calmly and modelling a quieter voice tends to work better than a strong reaction, which can be rewarding.
When can my baby drink from a cup instead of a bottle?
Many babies can start practising with an open or straw cup from around 6 months, usually with water at mealtimes. The AAP suggests limiting water to about 1 cup a day at this age, since milk still supplies most fluid. Bottles are commonly phased out between 12 and 18 months, and early practice makes that transition easier.
Is it normal for my 7 month old to be clingy to only one parent?
Yes, and preferring one person is common in the second half of the first year. It usually reflects developing attachment rather than a problem with the other parent, and preferences often swap over time. Wariness of strangers frequently appears now, and separation anxiety typically peaks between 10 and 18 months before fading.
Why does my baby wake as soon as I put them down in the crib?
The change from being held to lying on a flat, cooler surface is often what wakes a baby, especially if they were only lightly asleep. The AAP suggests putting babies down drowsy but awake so that falling asleep happens in the crib. Warming the sheet slightly with your hand first, and lowering bottom first, may also help.

When to check in with your doctor

Willo is a parenting companion, not a medical app. If something feels off, ask.

  • Your baby does not babble or make any consonant sounds by 7 months, or does not react to sounds and voices.
  • Your baby cannot sit with support, or seems very stiff or very floppy when held.
  • Your baby does not reach for objects, bring things to their mouth, or show interest in the people around them.
  • Your baby has lost a skill they previously had, such as babbling, rolling or making eye contact.
